CBC’s conference is designed to address spiritual concerns facing the church today. This year’s theme, Practical Applications of the Sovereignty of God, was chosen to address the misunderstanding and distortion that wrong views of God’s Sovereignty have caused. The Sovereignty of God is unquestionably one of the most comforting and liberating of all the doctrines in the bible. I can’t begin to describe how many times meditating on God’s sovereignty dispelled doubt and discouragement when I was tempted to despondency. However, any doctrine can be misunderstood or abused, including God’s Sovereignty. A revival of this doctrine in the 1960’s and 70’s, has since spawned misunderstanding and even harmful practices in some circles. For example, the negative labels “Frozen Chosen” and “Hyper-Calvinist” describe tendencies among some to misapply this doctrine. Perhaps you know someone who has abused the doctrine of God’s Sovereignty. Of course, such behavior would never be sanctioned by faithful Christians and ministers. Every true believer is concerned to “adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things” (Titus 2:10), but stilted views and misapplication produce dead orthodoxy, anti-nomianism, theological pride, coldness, imbalance, fatalism, legalism, and presumption. In seeking to provide biblical solutions five speakers will address God’s Sovereignty as it relates to evangelism, contemporary movements, false views, church life, and the love of God. - Pastor Joe Jacowitz
